Moving on Your Own: Five Things You Need to Handle the Task

Danny Morris

With a bit of creativity and some hard work, it may be possible to move house on your own, especially if you only have a small flat or a room full of stuff. However, the right tools make being a solo amatuer removalist a bit easier. Wondering what you need? Take a look at these five essentials:

1. A dolly

Dollies help you lift the objects that are too heavy to lift on your own. Make sure you hire a dolly designed for furniture removals. Standard dollies are often too small and don't have the necessary straps. With a moving dolly, you can move things like washing machines on your own, or you can speed up the process by moving huge piles of boxes all at once.

2. Ramps

If you rent a removalist truck, these trucks typically come outfitted with ramps that make it easy to move dollies or over wheeled items on and off the truck. However, you should also think about ramps for other areas. If you have a few steps leading up to the door of your new home, create a makeshift ramp out of a few pieces of plywood.

3. Sliders

For moving large pieces of furniture including chests of drawers or book cases, it is easier to slide than to lift, and this is especially true if you are trying to move on your own. Plan to slide objects as much as possible.

If you are moving something across carpet, wedge a piece of cardboard under it – that will make it slide. If you are moving something on hardwood, use a spare piece of carpet or an old towel as a slider. You can also buy special moving sliders that are slippery plastic on one side and soft carpet on the other.

4. Lots of time

Time is key when you are moving things on your own. You need to give yourself chances to take breaks and move slowly. Without ample time, you may run out of strength and energy before you finish the job.

5. Professional removalist help

In most cases, there are only a couple of items that cannot be moved by a single person, and they include large couches, heavy sofas and king-sized mattresses. Some people try to move king-sized mattresses on their own by bending them, and unfortunately, this can damage the mattress.

Rather than damaging any of your possessions or hurting yourself, consider hiring professional help from a removalist. Even if they simply stop by for an hour, they can make it possible for you to accomplish the move on your own.
